||5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.| Two sagas worth reading|By Christopher R. Travers|I bought this for the Saga of Gisli Sursson, simply because I had already read the Saga of the People of Eyre (Eyrbyggja Saga (Penguin Classics)).

Both these stories center around politics and law in the Icelandic republic. I found both to be informative regarding Icelandic society, religion, and history (the Eyrbygg|About the Author|Edited by Vesteinn Olason (Arni Magnusson Institute at the University of Iceland) and translated by Martin S Regal (University of Iceland) and Judy Quinn (Newnham College, Cambridge)

These sagas recount fierce feuds in which honour is fought for, sacrifice is demanded, and blood is shed. The fate of the characters at the centre of each saga, however, is very different. Gisli is a traditional Viking-age hero who is determined to exact revenge at any cost and whose death is tragic when it comes.
